Three Questions on Friday

  History

I want to learn a bit more about history this year. I don't know much about history, so I have no idea where to start.
Question: What would you suggest? Which country should I choose? Or a war? What's your favourite part of history?

  Books

I haven't read much last year and lost interesting in reading. But I want to change that and decided that the best way to get back into reading is YA fiction.
Question: Any suggestions? What are your 3-5 favourite YA fiction books?

  Movies

One of my goals in 2011 is to improve my language skills. That's why I'm looking for French movies.
Question: Do you know any good French movies?

Have a wonderful weekend and thanks a lot for your help! :)

Math Test

How many times does Austria fit into the USA?
Can you guess it?
Or calculate it without a calculator. Calculators are not allowed in my Math class :P

(more cryptic posts about Austria - coming soon!)

Ask me anything - It's QuestionMonth!!!

Anything you always wanted to know about me?
Questions you wanted to ask but are not related to any post?
Or do you just like to ask questions?

Then it's the perfect time for your questions, because it's QuestionMonth.

QuestionMonth is an idea I had some night this week when I tried to find some sleep and couldn't. Instead I found an idea.
From today till the 31st of december you can ask me whatever you want and I'll answer.
Simply, huh? ;)

I hope there are some people who like to ask me questions, because I love to answer question and would love to hear yours...

How to ask?
I created a Formspring page (which I will probably delete after QuestionMonth). You just have to enter your question there and I'll answer. You can find the question box in the sidebar and in this post. If you want to know if I've answered your question, click at "Formspring - OutsideIntoLife" above the question box and check it out. You don't have to sign in or stuff, just ask your question and PLEASE leave your name under the question!!! I'll not answer questions without a name!

To make it even more fun: If someone asks me something extremely funny or interesting or whatever I'll save the question and answer them in a blogpost every Wednesday. So don't worry if I do not answer you question - it might be a special one ;)

Need some ideas what to ask?
Some examples:
What's your favourite movie?
How many footsteps does it take to get from your room to the street outside the house?
How can you dislike poems and plays?
Have you ever seen an opera?
Can you say the alphabet backwards? From Z to A?

Just examples and of course, you can ask those question as well. ;)

I hope you have fun asking question.
I don't know how all this will went...I just want to try it...

Only one more thing to say: ASK!!!  :D

PS if you've already visit the Formspring page.: Yes, I've asked myself a question ;)

Queer language from 1911

Every language changes over the decades. There are new words and old words gets different meanings and others get old-fashioned. That's how languages works and that's great.
I really like how peopled talked 100 years ago or even earlier, but honestly, I'm glad that I don't have to talk like that!
I'm sure you know which words are old-fashioned in English and you know which words are now used in different ways and mean something different.
I'm familiar with "old" language as well...but only in German...

I'm reading "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett at the moment. First published in 1911.
I haven't finished it yet, but I want to tell you two things that happened while reading the first pages of the book.

1. In the middle of the first page you can read this sentence: "...her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people."
Guess which word made me stunned. Yes, it's the word "gay".
I only knew this word as a word for homosexual people, so I was quite surprised to read this word in a book published in 1911. And I thought "why does a woman want to hang out with gay people"?
I had no dictionary with me, so I decided that the author had some strange ideas and I continued reading.
I checked the word "gay" later and found out, that it is not only a word for homosexual people, but also for cheerful people who love fun.
Well...I think that's what the author wanted to say... ;)

My question: Do you still use the word "gay" for cheerful people? I've never heard it before...

2. The word queer.
I knew what the word queer means. It means something like strange or weird. But again it is also a word often associated with homosexuals. And that's why I know the word. Every time I read the word "queer" I automatically think the word "homosexual" the same time. It's a bit annoying, but what shall I do? Most of the time (and that isn't very often) I hear or read the word queer it HAS to do something with homosexuals.
In "The Secret Garden" the word queer appears in nearly every paragraph (the author was amazingly creative... *cough*). It's the most used word in the book. She used it for everything. Women in queer grand costumes, a queer morning, a queer place etc.
I don't want to see this word anymore!!! ;)

I wanted to share this with you, because I would like to know how often and in what way these two words are nowadays used and I wanted to show you the difficulties you come across when you read and use a foreign languages.

Have a wonderful, lovely weekend! :)

Movie blog?

I have a question for you:
Should I create a second blog for my movie reviews?
I really want to do more movie reviews and movie related stuff in the future, but I feel like this kind of posts do not fit into my rambling blog.
What do you think? Would you follow this blog?
I'm not sure. Please tell me what you think about it. :)

20 more movies

I have this list of things to reach in 2010 in my sidebar and as you can see I only have to watch 20 more movies to reach the "watch 100 movies" thing (and I'm far away from reaching the book-thing...).
80 movies. That's a lot. How many hours is that? Let's say one movie has an average length of 110 minutes. 110 times 80? Um, 8800 minutes = 146,6 hours!
146,6 hours? Oh my goodness! I spent 146,6 hours watching 80 different movies. Actually I spent more time watching movies, because I watched some of those 80 movies twice or even three times and yes, I think there are one or two movies, which I watched four times.
All in all, I spent much time watching films and I really enjoyed it.

Now I don't  know what to do with the fact, that I spent so much time completing this list.
Of course I could share this looooong list of 80 movies, which would be quite boring, but I want to do more.
Should I review some of them?
Maybe the "10 best movies" and the "10 worst movies"?
Or "The best romance", "the best drama", etc?
Are you even interested in reading movie reviews?
I could also do something like "The most beautiful movie locations" or "Best Soundtrack".
Whatever.

Please tell me what you think about it. I don't like it to just finish the thing with the list and that's it.

Oh, and please leave some movie suggestions! You know, I need 20 more movies! :)

Thank you a lot!

BTW, the screenshot is from "Atonement"...

White, white and a language shock

That's the result of "I want to draw a picture with a white crayon!"

And I'm shocked after searching a translation for the word "Buntstift" at google translations.
The English word for Buntstift is buntstift?
I'm totally confused and don't know if it is true.
That's weird because it's a German word, but there are so many German words in the English language...like Kindergarten, Doppelgänger, ersatz, Rucksack etc etc etc...

But, do you really call a crayon a buntstift???
