Today I came across my Dad’s old SLR camera. He was quite the photographer when he was at my age.
Old cameras really fascinates me. When I look at these analog cameras I always have to think about how easy it is nowadays to take a good picture. You can take 50 pictures of the same object/person and then pick your favorite. With an analog camera you took one shot or maybe two and you couldn’t see the result until it was developed.
There are pro’s and con’s about all these things. Today it’s less expensive. You just print out the pictures you really want to have as a physically thing. When my Dad was young he took a lots of pictures too, because it was his hobby, but first he had to pay for the film and then he had to pay to get them developed. I would say that photography was an expensive hobby (it still is if you think about all the lenses and stuff)
When I found his camera I also found a small box with some of his pictures. I looked at all of them and I couldn’t believe how good some of his photos were. My Dad really was talented. It’s so sad that he gave up photography.
I found three more boxes of my Dad's photos in my brother's room (he's into photography as well...) and I went through all the pictures.
Some of them were amazing, some of them weren’t that good, some of them were funny.
I showed some of them my Mom and we had to laugh a lot. About all the hairstyles my Mom had when she was young (she had a different haircut at almost every picture), about my Dad’s mustache and all the funny pictures when they were young. It turned out that the funniest pictures where those of their wedding. I honestly couldn’t stop laughing (a result of my Mom’s comments to the pictures…hilarious).
After seeing all these pictures. The captured moments. The colors. Black and white. Faded colors. The different formats of the pictures. All these things that fascinates me about analog photography makes me want to get into it as well.
I’d love to learn more about photography. Not digital photography. I like it as well, but it’s not something I’d love to do as a hobby. But analog photography…I want to give it a try.
So I hope to get a chance to get my hands on my Dad’s camera. I want him to tell me about all the fancy stuff he once bought for his camera and how to use it. I want to read books about it and I want to go out and capture the world.
Maybe I’ll fail at it. And I know that I don’t have the money for many films. But I don’t like it, that there’s an unused treasure hidden in our house…
Wow, those are really cool! Your dad must have really liked photography.
